Did Greek Life help me in my Professional Career?
I pledged at the Oh so fly Zeta Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. at Northern Illinois University during the Spring semester of 2014. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913 by 22 collegiate women at Howard University to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to those in need.
Our mission statement:
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is an organization of college educated women committed to the constructive development of its members and to public service with a primary focus on the Black community.
To this day, joining my sorority has been one of the single best decisions I've ever made. I sought out membership for lifelong sisterhood, scholarship and service. I wanted to create a bond with intelligent women from all over the world.
What I’m most grateful for is not the people that I've met but the woman I've become. Prior to joining, I would most definitely say that I was more reserved and to myself. I hesitated to go outside of my comfort zone. Since joining, I have improved on my business and professional skills. This has allowed me to be more confident in public speaking, creating educational programs, knowing how to book and prepare venues, and so much more. I doubt I would have been able to get that from any other organization.
So to answer the question, yes, my sorority changed my life and shaped me into the woman I was always supposed to be.
Along my pre-physical therapy journey, I’ve met some amazing Sorors who have become my mentors.
Lastly, I think regardless of what sorority/fraternity you're a part of, always remember why you joined and let that follow you throughout your life.
