NPHC President
Another important turning point in my undergraduate journey was when I decided to run for president of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). NPHC is the umbrella that houses all of the Black sororities and fraternities. These are:
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Omega Psi Phi fraternity, Inc.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
Zeta Phi Beta sorority, Inc.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.
Also referred to as the Divine Nine. Alongside leadership roles I had in my sorority, when the opportunity to be a part of the NPHC executive council came around, I was elated to have a chance to work collaboratively with my colleagues. My original idea of being a part of the e-board was within a much smaller role such as secretary. But LaSheda( the President before me and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,Inc.) had other plans because she pulled me aside and said “Why are you not running for President?” I simply replied that I didn't want the responsibility of the organization to be on me. She convinced me that running for anything other than President would be a complete waste and a disservice to the council. So because of LaSheda Brooks, I applied and became the President of NPHC. This served as an example of a time when I stepped far outside of my comfort zone. I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity, and I hope that my time being there made a difference. It surely made a change for me. The experience of running the council made me realize that I can manage and do what I put my mind to including an idea I had been toying with - owning a business. Thus, a business woman was created.
I dedicate this post to LaSheda Brooks aka Superwoman!
