That one Time
There was one time when I said that I have never met a Black Physical Therapist…This led to a sequence of events that led me to meeting my first Black PT.
After becoming acquainted with Dr. Collins, she helped me plan for the application process and selecting schools. I met her the month I graduated from undergrad, which was the best thing that could’ve happened to me. Since I was about to graduate, she referred me to the American Academy of Physical Therapy, an all black organization whose mission is to increase the number of minorities in Physical Therapy. I was elated to hear and learn about an organization that is solely focused on helping minorities reach their dream. Soon after graduation, I was in a search to experience physical therapists in different settings. I reached out to the president of the American Academy of Physical Therapy, Dr. Dona Greenhoward, to see if she had any opportunities available for me. She referred me to Dr. Diane Alsberry, a physical therapist near the south suburbs. After speaking with Dr. Alsberry, she then connected me with four additional physical therapists in the area that I could shadow. With that being said, meeting my first Black physical therapist opened many opportunities that I ‘m extremely grateful for. One connection became the starting line for many more!
Thank you to Dr. Greenhoward and Dr. Alsberry because although you never met me, you all felt my passion and believed in me. You all are inspiring!
