How to Utilize Your Gap Year
After graduation, the biggest question to ask yourself is if you’re ready to apply to PT schools. If the answer is no, it’s okay. I have some tips that will help you utilize your time effectively.
1.Get a job as a Rehabilitation Technician/Aide
A job as a rehab aide will help you prepare for physical therapy school. The experience will be useful in learning techniques and exercises that you will see in the future. To find a job, search sites such as Indeed or Monster.
2. Study for the GRE
Take at least 3 months to study for the GRE. The library has books that you can check out for free if you have a library card. Take a practice exam online (you can find it online for free).Set a realistic schedule for studying..
3. Gain shadowing experience
Reach out to physical therapy facilities and inquire about shadowing a therapist. Some places may not offer it, but it doesn’t hurt to call and ask. Gaining experience in different settings will help you stand out as a student.
4. Find a mentor
Having someone who has been through the process already will be an asset to have in your corner. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people.
5. Do your research / Familiarize yourself with PTCAS
Applying to schools can be overwhelming. Take time to make sure you know everything about schools you’re interested in. Compose a list of schools that you would like to apply to, then adjust your application according to what they are looking for.
6. Retake Classes if needed
This is the time to take any prereq classes that you didn’t take during undergrad or want to retake to boost your prereq GPA.
7. Make connections with Physical Therapist
During this time, you need to start thinking about who will be writing your letters of recommendation. This is why it is important to leave a good impression with the therapists you shadow or work with. It’s always a good idea to keep in contact.
8. Save money
Applying to PT school can be costly. If you plan on covering the cost yourself, I suggest you put some money aside to prepare. (This is where the list of schools becomes handy- based on the number of schools, you should be able to calculate how much to save.)
P.S. Be sure to follow @PTCAS on Twitter, they release the essay prompt a few days before the application opens.
